PDF Compatibility


The PDF, or portable document format, is one of the most commonly used document formats. PDF/X is commonly used by graphic designers and print professionals, this PDF file type is designed to better support graphics when sharing and printing. Based on International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standards, this format will have a set of rules and restrictions for its export settings. These will be flagged during pre-flight if the file you have submitted does not meet the standard's conditions. 


Any issues with the PDF Standard (PDF/X-1a) are flagged in the pre-flight report as the following errors:

  • PDF version is newer than 1.3

  • PDF/X entry is not “PDF/X-1a:2001”

  • PDF/X conformance level entry not PDF/X-1a:2001

  • The PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 entry in the document information must contain a correct value for identification of the respective PDF/X standard

  • The PDF format version number in the PDF file header is greater than 1.3.

  • PDF/X version key missing

  • Document title empty/missing

  • Compressed object streams used

  • RGB, or Lab was used or Source Profiles have been tagged to objects (also listed under ICC profile)

  • OutputIntent for PDF/X missing

  • PDF/X version key (GTS_PDFXVersion) missing

  • Trapped key not true or false

  • Transparency used

  • Layers used


Fixing the PDF Standard on InDesign

To fix these errors, please ensure that the PDF Standard is set to PDF/X-1a:2001 when you export from InDesign:
